CARTOON ALL-STARS TO THE RESCUE (90) Aiyiyi. Okay, so maybe making fun of this is like shooting Muppet Babies in a barrel. But hey, we LIKE shooting Muppet Babies in a barrel! So here goes: The first thing that needs to be said is that if you don't already do drugs you'll definitely be reconsidering before this half-hour long mind messer-upper is over. And if you DO do drugs, get 'em. Quick. Your already scorched and softened brain cells are going to need them to deal with the onslaught of a McDonald's funded anti-drug uberspecial (it originally aired on all four networks simultaneously) that opens with George and Barbara Bush (looking alternately uncomfortable and glassy-eyed) doing the Ron 'n' Nancy "Just Say No" schtick, followed by a parade of cartoon hotshots and has-beens telling it like it is about the evils of addiction, set within the context of a morality tale that's about as subtle as Uncle Tom's Cabin. Hey, we're not total misanthropes here. Little kids really shouldn't do drugs (it leaves less for Daddy for one thing) but messing with their innocent little noggins by suddenly confronting them with Simon, Garfield and Winnie the Pooh rapping about "smoking crack" and "shooting juice" isn't doing anybody any favors either. It is pretty freaking hilarious for us jaded burnouts though! Order

Despite its high brow sounding subtitle, "A Study of Violence, Racism and Sex in Cartoons" this is really just another (good) excuse to trot out an amazing collection of skeletons from the cartoon closet. Overwhelmingly, wonderfully weird Hungarian/American animation co-production would be considered grossly inappropriate for children today but hey, you know what? Screw 'em. So, let's see. What have we got here? The tortured warblings of Marie Osmond gamely trying to convince us that "it's all true." Burl Ives in voiceover explaining the difference between animals and people: "People take medicine, fight wars and read books. Animals don't." Paul Lynde doing his part for homophobia by voicing the main villain, who's portrayed as a mincing, conniving fag. Rough trade sharks wearing biker regalia slaughtering and eating African stevedores by the dozens. An animation style that can best be described as a cross between Peter Max and just plain hurtful.
