A MARRIED COUPLE (69) Long before "Reality TV" there was this film, an unflinching look at domestic destruction. Billy and Antoinette Edwards are the outwardly happy Canadian couple of the title. She is a shrill-voiced harpy with an East Coast accent that drills into the skull; he is a harried advertising executive. They essentially do what all married couples do, which is bitch nonstop about money. "We’re not buying you a God damn harpsichord, we’re only going to buy the essentials!" Their handsome suburban home positively drips with malaise and despair. Riding on the coattails of the hippie counterculture, Billy and Antoinette try to stay hip by doing interpretive dance routines to the Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper album. Away from her husband, Antoinette admits to an extramarital affair and begins to openly flirt with other guys. Our couple goes from kvetching about money to raging shouting matches over absolutely nothing and Billy starts to get physically abusive towards Antoinette. By the end of the film they tearfully discuss their lives away from each other. Alternately hilarious and excruciatingly painful, the film poses the question: Did the Edwards misbehave for the benefit of the camera? Sort of makes you think long and hard about the fish bowl nature of our current popular media. (review by Greg Goodsell) Order

Exploring the endlessly fascinating (to some anyway) world of death and decay Death Body focuses on traffic accidents and natural disasters while Death Women dwells on, well, dead women (with some really unnerving abortion footage thrown in for good measure). Strangely enough both segments are in black and white. Which might be a good thing since if it were in color you probably never would stop puking. But hold up there Mr. Iron Man, if that’s not gruesome enough for ya, stick around for Conversione Andro-Ginoica, the twelve minutes of hardcore sex change surgery footage at the end that’s not only in full color but is accompanied by some lovely elevator music to really twist your head around! DEATH OF A CENTERFOLD: THE DOROTHY STRATTEN STORY (81) Made for television the year following Stratten's tragic murder-by-husband, this cheesy schlocker stars Jamie Lee Curtis-- looking more like a Golden Girl instead of a Playmate-- playing the titular piece like a vacant housecat. You won't see her naked, but you will see her crying in lingerie with two black eyes after a night of estranged marital rape with Paul Snider (Bruce Weitz). Something else you won't see is a single mention of Peter Bogdanovich, the final straw who broke the Snider's back. Instead, they give us a poor facsimile in the shape of Robert "Mike Brady" Reed! THE DEVIL AT YOUR HEELS (82) Bizarre documentary that’s as fascinating as it is obscure. Stunt car driver Ken Carter, Canada’s answer to Evel Knievel, spent several years and several million dollars of other people’s money in the singleminded pursuit of one insane goal: jumping a jet-powered car across the St. Lawrence River from Canada to the United States. The reason you’ve never heard of him is because... he never actually jumped. There always seemed to be some problem with either the car, or the ramp, or the weather, or Ken’s shoes were too tight, or something. In fact, you see so many fitful starts and delays that eventually you want to throw the fucker across the river yourself. What makes it so interesting is the guy’s so damn sincere you’re never really sure if he was conning everyone from the start or just lost his nerve somewhere along the way. Recommended. Order

DEVIL'S MOUNTAIN (7?) Ultra-rare faux nature documentary (with a sinister slant) on the Polynesian islands boasting underwater photography as gorgeous as the South Pacific babes who really know how to move the grass around. Information on shark behavior, local customs, coconut picking, the Mother of Pearl industry, and the strange nesting habits of exotic birds are framed by the forced narrative of a camera crew member who previously stole a human bone from sacrificial ground and is trying to return it to the island in order to break his curse of bad luck! Director Milas Henshaw worked on several of Disney's television specials, as well as the Wild Kingdom-inspired Animal World. Order

DIVINE WATERS/DIVINE LIVE AT THE HACIENDA (85) Hard to find Italian made documentary (in English) on self proclaimed "sultan of sleaze" John Waters and his partner in crime, Divine. One of the best of the many Waters bios due in large part to the lengthy interview segments with John and his ultra-conservative parents. As a bonus we’ve also tacked on a rare appearance by Divine doing "her" musical/comedy act at a British nightclub. A must for fans. Order

DOROTHY STRATTEN: THE UNTOLD STORY (85) aka. Portrait of Dorothy Stratten. Upon viewing this touching remembrance of the short life and shorter career of Playboy's 1980 Playmate of the Year who was killed by her controlling husband, Paul Snider, in a grisly murder-suicide, I came away feeling, above all else, that Dorothy Stratten had some DAMN fine tits. And this "tribute" video does not hold back in displaying those golden globes. Various photographers, publicists, agents, and others try to reflect on personal and sincere levels, but their impact is a little offset by all the candid jiggling from several of Dorothy's photo shoots and films. One of the interviews even takes place in a strip club with a dancer in the background! Some great Playboy Mansion footage, also, including an eerie scene of tension between the estranged Stratten and the agitated Snider at the Playmate of the Year Party– "he insisting proprietary proximity, her trying to avoid him." You can almost feel those gears of murderous intent grinding behind his lazy eye. "She had it all...except the happy ending." But she definitely had very nice tits. Order

DREAM DECEIVERS: THE STORY BEHIND JAMES VANCE VS. JUDAS PRIEST (92) Inside look at the Judas Priest "Subliminal Suicide" trial where the parents of two dimbulb headbangers blamed their sons' shotgun suicide pact on secret messages hidden in the lyrics of one the band's songs. The case was eventually thrown out of court, no doubt due at least in part to the irrefutable logic of lead singer Rob Halford's contention that encouraging his fans to kill themselves would be more than a little counterproductive! 80 BLOCKS FROM TIFFANY’S (79) Rare inside look at two South Bronx street gangs, the Savage Nomads and Savage Skulls circa the late ‘70s. Directed in rambling, haphazard fashion by former SNL alumnus Gary Weis, the players are all interesting enough but, compared to the Tec-9 toting army of crack peddlers that took their place in the following decade, these cats seem almost quaint. EL DUCE: THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE VIDEO (9?) The Duce is dead alas, but his memory lives on in this hour-long tribute to the lead singer of the Mentors and his so called life. Always falling down drunk and/or stoned, always obscenely funny and/or incoherent, and always willing to let a woman pee on his head at the drop of a pair of panties, El comes across as a slightly kinder, gentler version of G.G. F.T.A. (72) During 1970 and 1971 Jane Fonda (yes, that's right, "Hanoi Jane"), her "Klute" co-star Donald Sutherland, and a few like-minded individuals (including Peter Boyle and Holly Near) toured US and Pacific Rim military bases with a politically oriented vaudeville program called "The F.T.A. Show" ("F.T.A." standing for, among other things "Free the Army"). Using songs and skits it was designed as an anti-war response to "entertainment" like Bob Hope's Christmas Show and asked its audience to question concepts like blind obedience to authority and America's presence in Vietnam. Almost completely forgotten today, this is the documentary of that tour which was distributed by American International Pictures and actually played in honest to goodness theatres. It's quite a remarkable document and well worth seeing regardless of your political bent. Just don't expect it to turn up on TNT anytime soon. Not in perfect condition, but good quality considering its rarity. Order

This eye popping "documentary" may have just been an excuse to show the constant stream of t&a, but the excellent colorful naked go-go girl trip footage backed with offbeat freak-out rock (which takes up half of the running time) makes this a unique experience! Because while the parents of this lily white bedroom community are off trying to support their mortgage payments their randy little offspring are getting together after school to enjoy drugs, binge drinking and massive multi-partner sex parties! The kicker here is that the entire syphilis "outbreak" is traced back to the local high school bad boy (from a broken home of course) who not only lets the kids use the family homestead as their private love shack but introduces a drippy dicked Black fellow into the mix as well. So it turns out the Rockdale kids aren't really lost. They just took a wrong turn into Niggertown! Yes, incredibly the takeaway here seems to be that premarital sex is bad but the REAL problem is these crazy kids fornicating outside of their gene pool! Believe it or not, this flick is highly approved by Oprah. Go figure! Order

THE OTHER HOLLYWOOD (99)  Capri Cameron, newly 18 and a contract starlet for a top XXX company, tells us she'd like to use porno as a springboard to acting in mainstream movies.  Then, during her first sex scene, her male co-star has to stop chowing her barely legal box because she used the wrong kind of twat makeup (the kind that tastes horrible).  After she scrubs herself clean, she attempts to deep-throat like she told the director she could and ends up puking into a handy bucket.  This Danish documentary about the American porn industry was made just after the infamous 1998 HIV outbreak and paints a sobering if objective portrait of the jizz biz.  XXX queen-turned-director Veronica Hart laments the long-lost days of 35mm films that required a modicum of talent; ass-meister and Paul Rudd lookalike Seymore Butts shows us Gonzo in action; and spitting-enthusiast/auteur Max Hardcore is pretty much a rapist  with a video camera.  Other interviews include Jenna Jameson, Ron Jeremy (of course), Sharon Mitchell, Johnny Wadd's crazy widow Laurie Holmes and HIV-casualty Brooke Ashley.  Despite the abundant nudity, it's not exactly beat-off material.  But you can try! One's interviewed while douching and another talks about turning tricks in men's rooms, while sitting in a men's room and shooting up with what has got to be the world's largest hypo. A hoot! Order

RATE IT X (85) Rare feminist antiporn documentary that's completely unsuccessful at making us Neanderthals feel guilty about lusting after the fairer sex. Once you've sidestepped the inherent bias you'll be treated to a walking tour of 42nd Street peep shows and sex shops, as well as interviews with Ugly George, unashamedly sexist admen, the creator of Hustler's "Chester the Molester," an editor for ebony stroke book Players, the inventors of the world's first adult video game "Custer's Revenge" (which looks like the porno equivalent of "Pong"), and, best of all, a brief chat with director Joel M. Reed, who refers to his gore/porn epic Bloodsucking Freaks as "a sophisticated comedy"! Order

THE ROAD TO EDEN (95) aka Der Weg Nach Eden. Well done documentary import (with English subtitles) follows a Hungarian coroner at work and play. Some grueling footage of cremation, brain removal, corpse preparation, and a truly disgusting fat guy autopsy, but keep in mind this is serious stuff - no hearts in blenders here! Order

SANDSTONE (76) Counter-culture freaks are sure to enjoy this documentary by Jonathan and Bunny Dana, which examines life at Sandstone, a self-contained community in California established in 1969 and populated by a mix of aging '60s radicals and younger degenerates, all eager to experience some of that swinging "Free Love" lifestyle they've heard so much about. And experience it they do! From the hairy, naked, middle-aged man with a bad toupee standing at a bar with his equally nude young daughter, to the requisite orgies (accompanied by sitar music) to the creepy old guy in his van filled with mirrors and stirrups, Sandstone will make you wish the Sixties had never ended. SCREWED (96) From the team that brought you Hated: GG Allin & the Murder Junkies comes this revealing documentary on the 300-pound cigar chewing, foul mouthed, walking contradiction that is Al Goldstein, publisher of the infamous NY smut rag Screw. Al spouts off on his 4 ex-wives, his 19 arrests, his upbringing (he reveals that his mother cheated on his father which probably explains a lot), and his feelings on the porn business (which he sees as being full of "losers"). In one amazing segment Al talks about his brother and how little they have in common, going so far as to say that if his sibling died tomorrow he probably wouldn’t go to his funeral. His brother meanwhile talks about what a caring guy Al is and how close they are! Plenty of porn stars, hookers, and pseudo celebrities (Curtis Sliwa?) put in appearances and there are lots of clips from Screw’s cable access program Midnight Blue including blistering "Fuck You" rants at everyone from former wives and Larry Flynt to Jack Nicholson! Some of the weirdest, funniest and saddest moments come from the interviews with a motley assortment of Screw’s readers, including a a cabbie who gives tips on buying sex and a black guy with an enormous (as in larger than ours) collection of pornography. We tag along with this charming fellow on one of his many trips to 42^nd St.’s Show World and share his excitement as he describes how he was fortunate enough to get to stick his finger up one of the girl’s butts. SHOCK MOVIE MASSACRE VOL. 1 (03) You must check out this brilliant UK made-for-cable series that plays like a sexier, sleazier, and more extreme version of Jonathan Ross' The Incredibly Strange Film Show. Top-heavy hostess with the mostest Emily Booth (whose accent may be as grating as Ross’ but who looks a LOT more shaggable) trawls the world’s cult movie landscapes, filing reports in a very sensationalistic style that comes off like a warped current affairs programme. In four action-packed episodes the ever game Booth does everything from getting cleavered in the face by German horror filmmaker Olaf Ittenbach (Legion of the Dead) to working as a PA on the American hardcore porn epic Truck Stop Trixie (where she has to wipe up cum stains, wash dildos and apply lube to overworked genitals).  Featuring visits to Troma in New York, meeting up with Day of the Beast director Alex De La Iglesia in Spain, having a cast made of her head by Creature Effects in London and popping into the dungeon of an American dominatrix who makes online B&D films, Shock Movie Massacre has something to please every fan of demented underground cinema. SHAUNA: EVERY MAN'S FANTASY (85) Heartessly crass and cynical porn industry cash-in on Shauna Grant's suicide directed by that veritable wellspring of humanity, Roberta Findlay. See porn actors and actresses talk about their memories of Shauna while they're fucking and sucking each other. See these same lowlifes gamely attempt to squeeze out an honest emotion only to fail miserably. Hear Shauna being showered with such touching compliments as "she had that wet-behind-the-ears innocence that never failed to arouse a crotch." There's even a mock interview with a female "psychiatrist" who analyzes Shauna's unwillingness to deep throat pecker as being an indication of her sexual inhibition, before doing a raunchy, incestuous role-playing number with creepy George Payne! The true definition of "pornography," the only thing this lacks is a scene of Ron Jeremy screwing poor Shauna's exit wound on the morgue examining table! Order

SOLDIERS IN HIDING (85) Deeply tragic documentary on Vietnam veterans who, unable to cope with civilian life, drop out of society and live "off the grid." Unable to shake off living under constant battle conditions in Southeast Asia, some former soldiers pitch tents in rural mountain areas, live in log cabins, and abandon their wives, children, family, jobs and civilization. The interview subjects have their own reasons. One former Marine says he was pulled out of battle too soon to fulfill his teenage military fantasies, while another former soldier makes his wife and kids live in subhuman conditions on a school bus whenever he’s not spending time on a luxury schooner he bought with his combat pay! While some of these guys would be fuck-ups no matter what fate had in store for them, one can’t help but wonder if the U.S. is currently breeding yet another generation of walking burnouts. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO A NAKED LADY? (70) Who would have thought that Allen Funt, the kindly looking creator and host of the wholesome American institution that is Candid Camera, was really just a dirty old man like the rest of us? In this astounding feature length documentary, Funt uses his tried and true hidden camera techniques to capture the shocked reactions of mutton-chopped men who try to hide their boners when confronted by jaybird naked women walking out of elevators, flagging down motorists on a country road, or asking passer-bys to hold ladders steady while they attempt to retrieve their kites from a tree. Of course, Funt also throws in plenty of discussions with various groups of people in an attempt to pass the whole thing off as some kind of profound sociological experiment, but we all know that the selling point of this film is the gratuitous tits and ass (although things do get a bit dark when Funt interviews a prostitute who not only doesn’t charge money but enjoys getting roughed up, and there’s something decidedly creepy about hearing him ask high school kids “How many girls have you balled?”). Unfortunately, the lovely Jo Ann Pflug (the buxom brunette who co-hosted Candid Camera with Funt) doesn’t make any nude appearances here. Order

WHAT LEONARD COHEN DID FOR ME (04) For someone who's known as the "godfather of gloom" Leonard Cohen sure does have a lot of fans. And a lot of influence. For example, there have been over 100 cover versions recorded of his song Suzanne and tribute albums to him feature contributions from the likes of REM, Elton John and the Pixies.
